Life on Mission 2019 | The Gospel & Family

The Family is our first mission field, or so would seem the implications of Deuteronomy 6:4–7

"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise."

Yet we spend so much time doing other things for our families to make them like everyone around us, that we are not spending time and resources to build relationship that gives us the right, as parents, to be heard when it comes to the topic of faith. We have made academics, sports, arts, and socializing the priority as we have let the eternal things slip away. At the heart of parenting is passing on the gospel baton to their children. Too many young people who grow up in a Christian home walk away from their faith. Could this be because parents are not being called and equipped in this vital area? Could the problem be that the church is not training parents for family discipleship?

The conference is not a fix-all for families, but contrary to methods and ideas that are aimed at a quick fix, Chap will be leading us from the scriptures to give us Biblical principles for leading our children at any age. For those without kids it will be a foundational series; for those who are single, you will be equipped to better engage your extended and faith families. The conference will be an excellent resource to remind us of what is really important and build confidence within a realistic framework of what obedient parenting is.

Chap is the Executive Director of The Apollos Project, a ministry devoted to helping parents disciple their children. For the previous 25 years, he was lead pastor in a New England Church plant. He has authored Disciple Making Parent, Evangelism for the Tongue Tied, and other family resources. He and his wife, Sharon, have four adult children.
